Rejected petition Allow 16 and 17 year olds to vote in the Snap General Election on June 8th.

16 and 17 year olds were able to vote in the Scottish independence referendum in 2014, the Scottish Parliament elections in 2016 and will be able to vote in the local elections in Scotland this year but not the general election which is held literally a month afterwards.

It's our future to.

More details

In the Scottish independence referendum, according to ICM’s survey, 75% of 16 and 17 year olds voted, compared with 54% of 18-24 year olds and 72% of 25-34 year olds.

Additionally, at 16 years old, you can leave school, join the armed forces, seek full employment and be liable for tax.

Votes at 16 will generate an interest in politics at an earlier age and therefore mean that they will be more likely to vote in the future.

We are a lot more informed than previous generations at our age.
