Closed petition Improve allergen labelling on food packaging.

Closed on

8% of children and 2% of adults have one or more potentially life threatening food allergies (not intolerances), yet labelling is unclear.
Food should be labelled with:
the front of packaging should have icons to show the type of allergen*.
The back should list all allergens separately.

May contains statements are currently optional - leaving people unsure if food is safe. They should be mandatory where there is a genuine risk of cross contamination. Even a small amount of allergen can be fatal.

Currently allergens are made bold in the main ingredients list. Allergy sufferers and their carers have to carefully examine the ingredients to spot them.
