Petition Ban unconditional offers for entrance to university
Universities have embarked on a race to the bottom in admissions standards in a now liberalised marketplace. To benefit society, the free market needs a framework of rules within which to operate. The government should legislate to prohibit this harmful practice, which is damaging pupil attainment.
More details
The number of unconditional offers for entrance to university made to 18 year olds in England, Wales and N.I. is exploding:
2013 3,000
2014 12,100
2015 23,400
2016 36,800
2017 51,600
UCAS recorded one in six applicants receiving one or more unconditional offers in 2017.
Such offers remove the incentive for pupils to work, leading to lower attainment at A Level, as UCAS' own research has demonstrated: see pages 18-9 of https://www.ucas.com/file/71796/download?token=D4uuSzur.
