More details

The Eighth Amendment of the Constitution of Ireland recognises the equal right to life of the mother and her unborn child. This amendment created a constitutional recognition of an unborn child’s life and so makes it impossible for any government to introduce legislation allowing for terminations in the womb except in exceptional circumstances. It was effected by the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution Act, 1983, which was approved by referendum on 7 September 1983 and signed into law on the 7th of October of the same year.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

Your petition is about something that the Northern Ireland Assembly is responsible for. The UK Parliament can't legislate on matters which are devolved to Northern Ireland.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
