Rejected petition Revoke the Trade Disputes Act 1906

The current dispute over the USS pensions at universities across the UK will lead to substantial financial losses for current students at these universities, as striking lecturers have suggested that the content not being taught during the strikes will still be included in the final exams.

More details

As paying customers and as citizens, I believe students should have the right to seek compensation for the financial losses they will incur as a result of the UCU's actions. The universities have not breached any legal contracts or broken any rules here, the fault lies with the unions.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. Repealing the Trade Disputes Act 1906 would not necessarily allow an individual to bring a case against a trade union for compensation due to financial losses. For example, trade union law was consolidated in the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do. This could, for example, ask for the law to be changed so that individuals could sue unions for damages causes by strike action.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
