Closed petition Debate a ‘National Strategy to Promote the Switch to Cloth Nappies.’
Closed on
More families would switch to cloth with sufficient information and a financial incentive. Ringfence money so councils can effectively promote cloth through well resourced libraries, liaison with antenatal/ postnatal services and incentives. Hold manufacturers of disposable accountable to help fund.
In the UK, app 8 million nappies are thrown daily; app 3% of our household waste* (app. half a million tons, annually)**. One baby will produce app. 1 ton of waste*** which takes > 200 years to biodegrade. Disposable nappies also have greater environmental costs due to the production process. Those who use cloth tend to switch to reuseable wipes and bags, further reducing use of single use items.
Councils pay £88.95 p/tonne, in landfill tax.
