Closed petition Let women set a cap on how much they will claim from the father of their child
Closed on
The law disregards agreements made by women who conceive via sperm donation without using a clinic. This puts men who help them at risk of getting a huge bill. Many are deterred; among them those who could bring most to the self-image, aspirations and aptitudes of the children.
A legally recognised ‘limit of liability’ would give security to the donor while allowing scope for some agreed financial contribution. This could:
avoid the need for secrecy and anonymity
provide more money for poorer families
make sperm donation a practical alternative to getting pregnant in an unsatisfactory or short-term relationship
start a virtuous circle of better donors and higher regard for sperm donation
