This petition was submitted during the 2017–2019 Conservative government

Rejected petition Protect our nhs staff by introducing blanket HIV testing in hospitals.

Staff exposed to needle stick injuries are at risk of contracting HIV. Testing a patient for HIV to determine risk of infection requires consent, not all patients can do so. This means the person potentially exposed either has to take prophylaxis or wait months in limbo for their own test results.

More details

The law should protect nhs staff and patients from the risk of contracting blood borne viruses by permitting testing of patients who do not have the capacity to provide consent.
