Rejected petition Give students free bus travel

When you reach age 60, you qualify for free bus travel. Students aren’t often paid and have to pay for bus travel using parents or their savings. I think if people over 60 are able to get free bus travel, people of student age should be able to as well.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

Bus fares are not set by the UK Government. Local bus operators (bus companies) are free to set their own fares. However, local transport authorities (usually local councils) have the power to set maximum fares in some circumstances.

If you would like bus fares in your local area to be lower, you could raise this with your local council. You can find out who your local councillor is here:

If you want the Government to fund free travel on public transport for students, you may wish to sign this petition instead: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/219358

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
