Rejected petition Ban companies passing on personal details and make “cold mailing” illegal.

We, the undersigned, call upon HM Government to make it illegal for any company to forward personal details they may have received from customers (by any means) to a third party and for such third parties to use this information for “cold mailing” purposes.

More details

It is becoming increasingly clear that in order to circumvent the law regarding “cold calling” certain companies and organisations, notably those dealing with PPI claims, are turning to the use of “cold mailing” in order to attract customers. And while we do not wish to prevent ANY company from attracting customers, the use of “cold mailing” (as with cold calling) is an invasion of privacy, especially when the recipient of any such mail has generally NOT given their permission for their personal details to be forwarded to a third party.

We therefore call upon HM Government to immediately introduce legislation to outlaw “cold mailing”.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. In particular, we're not sure whether you'd like new rules to prevent companies passing on the personal details of customers or whether you'd like to ban cold mailings (Junk mail).

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
