Closed Criminal Record checks on drivers of taxis and private hire a legal requirement.

Currently no legal requirement only recommendations. There should be mandatory checks in place as a minimum requirement. Licences should be removed from those found to have violent or sexual convictions. We have a duty to protect women, children and the vulnerable and less able.

Drivers of taxis and private hire vehicles are currently allowed to keep their licences and continue to work even if they have criminal convictions.
