Rejected petition Stop HS2

The evidence from other parts of the world, where high speed routes have been introduced to a national centre, is not that it brings wealth to those outlying regions but that it further concentrates wealth in that centre.

More details

The projected cost is now 100 billion pounds

In my view, it is a misconceived idea.

For example, the reduction in time from London to Birmingham, say, is relatively negligible.

Why not improve the links in the supposed powerhouse of the North for those in Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds for example

100 billion pounds is a massive amount of money

It can be used to provide more transport benefits to more people in the UK than on HS2

The channel 4 Dispatches programme, featured Oxera, showing that HS2 to Birmingham only would generate £1.15 for every pound spent in terms of jobs and growth whilst continuing to Manchester and Leeds would generate £2.30 for every pound spent. However, better rail links across the Northern powerhouse would generate £2.70 per pound spent
