Closed petition Keep May 4th 2020 as a bank holiday
Closed on
Ministers are poised to move the May Day bank holiday next year so that it falls on Friday, May 8 — the 75th anniversary of Germany’s unconditional surrender in Europe.Greg Clark, the business secretary, is reported to have asked the chancellor for permission to move the date from Monday, May 4th.
VE Day marked the formal acceptance by the Allies of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender in the Second World War. The Trades Union Congress called for the 75th anniversary to be given a separate bank holiday. Although the origins of the May Day holiday are thought to lie in a Roman festival to mark the start of summer, in modern times the bank holiday has celebrated the struggle for workers’ rights.
