Petition Make it illegal for anyone not registered to carry out electical work

Every day many members of the public are overcharged for poor quality sometimes dangerous electrical work. To prevent this, we propose that all electrical work on fixed wiring systems be carried out by a person registered with a competent person scheme.

These schemes already exist however membership is not compulsory, nor do they have the same legal status as gas safe. By giving these schemes the same legal status as gas safe we can massively improve the safety of many domestic installations.

To complement this, it should also be made a requirement that a person purchasing electrical installation materials produce proof of membership of a scheme before the sale is completed.
