Closed petition Ban ear piercing under the age of 10
Closed on
The UK requires parental consent for a baby or young child to have their ears pierced.
Ear piercing is a permanent form of body modification, which is associated with pain and elements of risk. We are unable to confirm if said children agree to the procedure, thus age restrictions need apply.
Ear piercing carries the following risks:
Abscess
Allergic reaction
Perichondritis
Embedded earrings
Infection
Keloid scarring
Traumatic tearing
Parents are unable to confirm that the baby/young child is aware of the risks, permanence of the procedure on their body, or consenting to the procedure.
In the UK 10 is the age in which a child is deemed criminally responsible, therefore at this point they should be able to understand the associated risks and agree to the procedure.
