Rejected petition Encourage Student Finance England to issue final loan instalments early

Most final loan instalments for students in the UK are due to be issued on April 20, or thereabouts. We would like this date to be pushed back considerably to help students who are unable to work due to self-isolation.

More details

We would like this date to be pushed back considerably to help students who are struggling to make ends meet as a result of the coronavirus. Although government policy is changing by the half-day, there is as yet no guarantee that rent or bill freezes will be in place to protect a sharply incremental group of students who will be unable to work or will lack financial support as a result of self-isolation. An early instalment will help alleviate avoidable financial difficulties for a great many.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

The payment of student loans is a matter for the Student Loans Company and Student Finance England, not the Government or Parliament.

We have published a petition calling on the Government to reimburse all students of this year’s fees due to strikes and COVID-19, which you might like to sign: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

We have also published a petition calling on the Government to freeze student loan payments and interest accrual for Covid-19, which you might like to sign: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/308579

We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people, including students. Student Minds, a mental health charity for students, is collating guidance and developing resources to support students experiencing stress as a result of the current situation, which you may find useful: https://www.studentminds.org.uk/coronavirus.html
