Rejected petition All University students to get full maintenance loan for the 2020 academic year

University student maintenance loan are means tested based on parents income. The next student intake should have the test removed and the full loan given. Students will be able to take control of their own lives, and not be affected by parents financial problems arising from Coronavirus.

More details

Families are facing very uncertain financial times due to Coronavirus. By allowing every student to each get a full maintenance loan, pressure is relieved on families facing uncertain times about their own employment and ability to pay the difference based on their existing/historic income.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

The payment of student loans is a matter for the Student Loans Company and Student Finance England, not the Government or Parliament.

We have published a petition calling on the Government to reimburse all students of this year’s fees due to strikes and COVID-19, which you might like to sign: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/302855

We have also published a petition calling on the Government to freeze student loan payments and interest accrual for Covid-19, which you might like to sign: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/308579

We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people, including students. Student Minds, a mental health charity for students, is collating guidance and developing resources to support students experiencing stress as a result of the current situation, which you may find useful: https://www.studentminds.org.uk/coronavirus.html
