Rejected petition Waive nurses' and midwives' £120 NMC registration fee for 2020/21.

Every year, all nurses and midwives must pay £120 to be registered with the NMC - effectively, to have a licence to work. In light of the extra strain on the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in recognition of the work of all healthcare staff, we would like this fee to be waived this year.

More details

The nation has shown its support of healthcare workers through a weekly round of applause; businesses have advertised discounts and special perks. Let the government now recognise the outstanding work of nurses and midwives during the pandemic by funding the registration fee for this year.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

The level of registrations fees are a matter for independent regulators such as the General Medical Council and Nursing and Midwifery Council, and not the Government or Parliament.

We have published a petition calling on the Government to reimburse health care professionals for professional registration fees, which you might like to sign: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/307399

You could start a new petition calling on the Government to fund health regulators directly, so they do not need to charge a registration fee.
