We’re waiting for a new Petitions Committee

Petitions had to stop because of the recent general election. Once a new Petitions Committee is set up by the House of Commons, petitions will start again.

Closed petition Create a 250,000 signature benchmark to oblige immediate debate of a petition

I would like Parliament and the Government to create a new benchmark so when public opinion is very strong, i.e. 250,000 signatures or more Parliament is obliged to debate a petition immediately.

More details

Under the terms of the current 100,000 benchmark, the Petitions Committee only has to consider a petition for debate. This can make it harder for urgent issues raised by petitions to be debated promptly. Parliament should be accountable to the very people that put them there. I feel that when public opinion is very strong Parliament and the Government should be obliged to debate.
