Rejected petition Make racial, gender and pay equality a legal requirement.

The government needs to set up legally enforceable rules and a body/organisation that will enforce the rules to ensure that UK companies become more diverse. Current laws and systems are clearly insufficient to address these inequalities and encourage more segregation between races and sexes.

More details

Because the current legal sources only apply, in most cases, where a wrong has already taken or is taking place it leaves room for employers to unfairly discriminate against people for specific reasons such as gender and race at the initial stages of employment since it's more difficult to prove and challenge. Recognition that the mere use of words such as ‘commit to have a more diverse workforce and reduce the pay gap’ are not enough to address the issues of inequality in the UK workforce.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We understand you are concerned about discrimination, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. It is already illegal to discriminate on the basis of race or sex, or other protected characteristics.

We have published a petition calling for mandatory ethnicity pay gap reporting which you may like to sign:
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300105

You could start a new petition calling on the Government to introduce new requirements to report on pay gaps, or to create a new body to scrutinise compliance with legal requirements in respect of equality legislation and pay, with powers to impose sanctions on employers who breach this legislation.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
