A petition to Knight Tenzing Norgay the skilled mountaineer and Sherpa guide who lead sir Edmund Hillary to the summit of Mt Everest.
Following the successful first ascent of Mt Everest in 1953, the expedition leader John Hunt and joint-summiter Edmund Hillary (a New Zealand citizen) were both offered knighthoods, whereas Tenzing Norgay was only offered the Victoria cross, a completely inappropriate award.
The UK government needs to right this historical wrong by recognising the achievement of this remarkable man who played such a pivotal role in carrying a British flag to the summit of the worlds highest mountain.
We need to get on the right side of history by accounting for the prejudice of the government who kept this award from the strongest mountaineer on an expedition that brought pride to our nation. Do right by Tenzing Norgay's family, the Sherpa people and the Mountaineering community.
