Amend Section 3 of the Road Traffic Act 1988,to include

More details

Nationally, hundreds of thousands of citizens are suffering stress and ill-health due to increased vehicle noise and emissions, which they feel helpless to avoid and Police are powerless to prevent. Much noise and pollution is caused by a few individuals altering their vehicles for their own gratification. The law needs to be changed to deter the selfish minority dominating the majority. The amendment is easy to understand and to enforce. The Penalties are proportionate and necessary.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We understand that you are concerned about noise and emissions from cars and motorbikes, but it's not clear exactly what you want the Government to do about this.

The title of your petition refers to noise and emissions, but your petition text calls for a new offence for driving a vehicle in any way which could cause a nuisance to another person, which would have a much wider effect.

There are already vehicle noise limits, and it is already illegal to modify the exhaust system to make a vehicle noisier after it has been ‘type approved’: https://www.gov.uk/noise-pollution-road-train-plane

Taking action in respect of breaches of these rules is a matter for the police.

We have published the following related petitions, which you might like to sign:

Introduce a ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars by 2025 in the UK: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/325512

We could accept a petition calling for the Government to reduce noise limits for all vehicles, or to reduce the allowable level of emissions from all vehicles, but it would need to be clear exactly what action you want the Government to take.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
