Closed petition Ban the redevelopment of agricultural land. Protect it for food production.

We would like the government to protect our agricultural / farmland for food production and not allow it to be used for building houses or other projects that would harm the soil or stop it producing food for our nation.

More details

The UK on average only produces around 50% of the food eaten by its population, with global warming, changing the weather around the world, the UK should no longer rely on vast amounts of food from other countries to feed us, it is important that we retain the ability to feed our population, preventing food shortages and starvation in future years.

Only by protecting our farmland will we be able to meet this need for food, if it is no longer available from abroad.

What are backbench business debates?

Backbench business debates give backbenchers (MPs who aren’t ministers or shadow ministers) an opportunity to secure a debate on a topic of their choice, either in the Chamber or Westminster Hall.

MPs can make a request for a debate to the Backbench Business Committee, who hears and decides which debates to schedule.

Backbench debates can either be general debates (which do not end in a vote) or be on a substantive motion (which calls for an action and can end in a vote). This debate was a general debate.
