Closed petition Ban secondary schools from starting teaching before 9am

The Government should ban secondary schools from starting teaching before 9am. Chronotypes change throughout lifetimes, especially during childhood and adolescence. Teens’ internal clocks run on different bio time than most adults’ clocks do, preferring afternoon and evening activity to mornings.

More details

A growing body of research indicates the benefits of later school times for teenagers. Studies have found that when starting school later for teens can:

• Increase the amount of sleep students get
• Improve grades
• Reduce the number of students seeking help from counsellors and nurses
• Reduce sick days and tardiness
• Make teenagers easier to live with and more connected in their relationships at home
• Reduce incidence of car accidents among teen drivers
