Rejected petition Stop IGCSE exams from being taken this summer.

Stop IGCSE exams being taken this year. 95% of IGCSE exams are taken by private schools pupils - since the GCSE exam programme has been suspended for 2021 the qualification of private school pupils with the IGCSE offers them a clear and unfair advantage.

More details

We would like Parliament to suspend IGCSE exams for 2021 in line with the suspension of GCSE exams. To offer IGCSE exams, 95% of which are taken in private school, offers a clear advantage to the life chances of these pupils and is grossly unfair to state-educated pupils at the same level. Children deserve to be offered the chance of the same qualification at the end of 11 years of education, regardless of background or financial means.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

Decisions about courses and assessments that are delivered by independent educational institutions, as opposed to state schools, are a matter for individual exam boards and educational institutions, not the Government or House of Commons.

We could accept a petition calling for the Government to prohibit any exams from taking place during the Covid-19 outbreak, if that is something you want to happen.

We understand that the current situation is stressful for many people, including students. Student Minds, a mental health charity for students, is collating guidance and developing resources to support students experiencing stress as a result of the current situation, which you may find useful: https://www.studentminds.org.uk/coronavirus.html

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
