Closed petition Mandatory testing for hereditary conditions for breeding dogs
Closed on
Thousands of dogs die slow, painful deaths each year due to hereditary conditions, such as kidney disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and liver failure. This could be avoided by simple DNA testing to ascertain if breeding dogs carry a faulty gene.
Post-Brexit, the Government have more powers to regulate dog breeders within the UK. There are currently no laws that require breeding dogs are checked for the prescience of faulty genes. There are currently 131 molecular genetic tests available to canine and feline owners, offered by 43 laboratories world-wide. However, testing is not mandatory in law and can lead to breeders irresponsibly breeding dogs that carry faulty genes. I am asking for law to be in place to endure testing is done.
