Closed petition Do not make verified ID a requirement for opening a social media account.
Closed on
Requiring verified ID for the opening of a social media account would cause multiple issues - most notably, LGBTQ+ teens who had not yet come out to their parents could face severe discrimination and it would be far, far easier for users to be doxed should the information be obtained.
I believe we should not have ID verification on social media. This is for multiple reasons. Firstly, there is the threat to LGBT teens. The internet is a place to for this group to speak about their sexuality. This makes them feel accepted, making them feel that they are not alone. Making ID an essential part of creating an account would mean that parents would be able to see this / their preferred pronouns, which could lead to abuse / other serious implications. Secondly, there is the risk of 'doxxing'. Thirdly, ID would be checked by companies. They should not be trusted with our IDs.
