Closed petition Require supermarkets to donate food past its Sell-by-Date
Closed on
Require supermarkets to donate food that is, instead of disposing of it, where it is still safe for consumption. This would enable charities to then distribute it to people in need.
There are millions of hungry in the UK, the 6th richest nation in the World. All our major supermarkets throw away (waste) food once it is past its Sell-by-Date. As France did in 2016 a law requiring supermarkets to donate unsold food on sell by date would be the single most important step to eliminate hunger in the UK. The Charities distributing the food would be required to fulfil Health and Safety criteria to ensure safety.
