Closed petition Legislate to ban vehicles parking on pavements

Legislate to ban parking on pavements on public roads. In our area, we have an issue of narrow streets with a public park with no parking facilities other than the surrounding streets which cause congestion as residents cannot park. You cannot go out. This must happen in many areas.

More details

The Government need to act on this as people end up walking in the middle of the road with children and prams we are waiting for an accident to happen. We have a Council bus that regularly is unable to access roads to drop off children returning from their schooling. Our local Council appear to not want to do anything as the answer is "IT SLOWS VEHICLES DOWN"! On numerous occasions, if a fire engine was required to an address it would not be able to access due to the quality of parking.

Government responds to petition about pavement parking

The Government has responded to a public (paper) petition about parking on pavements. The petition was presented to the House of Commons by Afzal Khan MP on behalf of councillors representing wards in the Manchester Gorton constituency.

The petition asks the House of Commons to urge the Government to respond to the consultation 'Pavement parking: options for change' and begin the process of implementing a default ban on pavement parking across England.

In response to the petition's request, the Government states that it recognises the importance of this issue to all pedestrians, and says it received over 15,000 detailed responses to the consultation, and that every single response has been analysed and the Government has been giving careful consideration to the findings.

The Government also said that it is working through options and possible legislative opportunities for delivering them, and that, in the meantime, local authorities have the powers to restrict pavement parking wherever there is a need, by introducing traffic regulation orders.
