Rejected petition Give more power to private landowners to help prevent unauthorised parking.

There is almost nothing in place to stop people parking on private land without authorisation. This lack of legislation protects those who violate the law, not the people trying to obey it. There should be proper channels to allow private landowners to have unauthorised vehicles clamped or removed.

More details

A serial offender regularly parks untaxed, unregistered, and sometimes SORN-registered vehicles in the private, residential car park where I live. Residents pay for these spaces. The owners of the building and car park have placed notices warning of fines, but it doesn't help as the vehicles aren't registered. The local police, local council, and the DVLA refuse to get involved because the car is on private land. So, basically, the offender can get away with it. This simply isn't fair or just.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you are concerned about unauthorised parking on private property, but we're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

Parking on private property is normally a matter for the landowner, rather than the police or relevant local authority, but it is already possible for the landowner to seek a court order for the removal or the vehicle, or to take legal action against the owner.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what changes you would like to be made to existing rules about unauthorised parking on private property. For example, we could accept a petition calling for this to be made a criminal offence, so that offenders face criminal sanctions.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
