Closed petition Implement BEIS Select Committee recommendation on Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme

The Government should reform the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme set up in 1994 following the privatisation of the coal industry, so that pensioners receive an immediate uplift, and the scheme is revised so Government is only entitled to a share of surpluses if the Scheme falls into deficit.

More details

For a quarter of a century consecutive governments have taken financial resources out of the scheme and put them into the Treasury. The scheme was allegedly drawn up to ensure that retired miners' pensions were protected but the intervening years have shown that the agreement was massively over generous towards the Government, whose concerns over their exposure to risk were totally unfounded.

MPs hold debate on miners and mining communities

MPs held a debate on miners and mining communities on Thursday 9 May, in the House of Commons.

The debate was led by MPs Grahame Morris and James Grundy. Lee Rowley MP, the Minister for Housing, responded for the Government.

During the debate MPs discussed the Mineworkers' Pension Scheme, as well as the recommendations relating to the scheme made by the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee in 2021.

The debate was scheduled by the Backbench Business Committee.

What are backbench business debates?

Backbench business debates give backbenchers (MPs who aren’t ministers or shadow ministers) an opportunity to secure a debate on a topic of their choice, either in the House of Commons Chamber or Westminster Hall.

MPs can make a request for a debate to the Backbench Business Committee, which hears and decides which debates to schedule.

Backbench debates can either be general debates (which do not end in a vote) or be on a substantive motion (which calls for an action and can end in a vote). This debate was a general debate.
