We are calling on the Government to remove VAT on all COVID-19 tests used in the UK including those purchased and administered by the private sector enabling Britain to get back to work, travel and play.

Individuals that have to take a private COVID test through no fault of their own – for example as a requirement for international travel – can still charged more than £60 per testing kit, in part because of the 20% addition to the cost via VAT.

This extra cost for private kits is a substantial “holiday tax” for people looking to travel overseas as this begins to be possible after lockdown. This is an inequitable situation that will substantially increase the cost of holidaying overseas for families. The Government should look to ease this burden as Britain begins to return safely to work, travel and leisure.
