Closed petition Banning of Fipronil and Imidacloprid in flea treatments for dogs
Closed on
To ban the use of Fipronil and Imidacloprid products in the treatment of dogs and cats for the prevention of fleas and ticks. They have been found to enter our rivers and waterways when the bedding of dogs and cats are washed with the effluent entering the sewerage system and thence rivers.
The use of Fipronil and Imidacloprid in products designed to prevent the infestation of dogs and cats with fleas and ticks has been found to be extremely detrimental to insect life in our rivers. Several millions of animals are treated many times a year. The products degrade to compounds that are more persistent in the environment. Fipronil and its toxic breakdown products have been present in nearly all freshwater samples tested. This is of extreme concern for the insect life in our rivers.
