Closed petition Require drivers to report hitting a cat, and scans for cats hit by a car

Make it a legal requirement for drivers to report when a cat has been hit in a road traffic accident. The police or relevant local authority should then be required to ensure that any cats hit by a car is scanned for a microchip in order to inform their owner, before the cat is disposed of.

More details

The Government need to have this law in place in order to ensure that these incidents are reported, and to help grieving owners and to give a family some closure when their pet is missing. There should be consequences in place for those who don't stop and or don't report the accident such as a large fine. Scanning for microchip must also be a legal requirement in order to help families have closure which can benefit mental health.

Share your views on whether drivers should have to report collisions with cats

The MPs on the Petitions Committee have scheduled a debate on a petition calling for cats to be included in Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, which you have signed. The change requested by this petition would mean that drivers would be legally required to report a collision with a cat to the police, as is currently the case for dogs.
