Closed petition Scrap Smart Motorways & reinstate hard shoulders

The Government needs to address the danger of smart motorways & reinstate the hard shoulder for distressed vehicles.

More details

I travel regularly on motorways & have seen vehicles broken down & in distress in a live lane. There have been people killed needlessly in these lanes & I fear worse to come.

MPs debate smart motorways

On Wednesday 22 February, MPs debated smart motorways. Some MPs who took part in the debate raised concerns about the safety of smart motorways and the use of the hard shoulder as a live lane.

This was a Westminster Hall debate, led by Sarah Champion MP. Richard Holden MP, a Minister from the Department for Transport responded to the debate.

What are Westminster Hall debates?

Westminster Hall is the second Chamber of the House of Commons.

Westminster Hall debates give MPs an opportunity to raise local or national issues and receive a response from a government minister. Any MP can take part in a Westminster Hall debate.

Debates in Westminster Hall take place on ‘general debate' motions expressed in neutral terms. These motions are worded ‘That this House has considered [a specific matter]'.
