Closed petition Repeal the Trade Union Act 2016

The Trade Union Act 2016 restricts the actions and powers of workers and trade unions, with the implementation of an arbitrary turnout threshold (50%) needed to make a strike legitimate. Even if a strike receives 100% support, if the turnout is under 50%, the vote is not counted.

More details

In the 2019 General Election, the current governing party obtained 43.6% of the vote - far below a majority, yet they are recognised as such.

Some ballots for strike action held since the Trade Union Act was passed have been approved by substantial majorities of voters, but due to turnout being under 50% have been dismissed.

This Act must be repealed by parliament.
