Closed petition Reform marital law so what you bring into a marriage remains yours by default

Closed on

The Government should change the law so assets acquired, given or inherited prior to the union (pre-marital assets) automatically remain the property of the recipient spouse by default. Only assets created or acquired after the union should be divided on divorce.

This could remove the need for pre-nuptial agreements. No-one enters into a union expecting it to break up, yet one third of them do, with many individuals losing family contributions and savings generated before marriage. This change in law will protect families by allowing parents to make financial sacrifices to help their children and will encourage individuals to further their education, careers & business without fear of later loss.
