Petition Reform council tax to a 0.48% charge of the current property value

The current council tax system is not sufficiently progressive. To rectify this the Government should impose a blanket council tax rate of 0.48% of a property’s existing value (which is annually evaluated) ensuring a fairer system.

More details

The Fairer Share Campaign has highlighted that a property in Middlesbrough worth £150,000 (with a tax bill of £1,702) pays over 1% of the value of the house in tax, whilst an £8 million home in Westminster (with a tax bill of £1,560) pays only 0.02%. This creates an unjust disparity.

Thus the Government must replace this structure with a fairer system that reflects property value to ensure everyone in society pays an equal share.

What are Westminster Hall debates?

Westminster Hall is the second Chamber of the House of Commons.

Westminster Hall debates give MPs an opportunity to raise local or national issues and receive a response from a government minister. Any MP can take part in a Westminster Hall debate.

Debates in Westminster Hall take place on ‘general debate' motions expressed in neutral terms. These motions are worded ‘That this House has considered [a specific matter]'. This means that Westminster debates don’t end in a vote on a particular action or decision.
