Petition Ratify and implement the Istanbul Convention

The Istanbul Convention has been described as a groundbreaking European treaty that establishes standards to prevent violence against women, support survivors, and hold perpetrators to account.

More details

While the UK Government signed the treaty in June 2012, it is yet to be ratified.

We believe the UK justice system is failing survivors of domestic abuse.

Rape prosecutions have fallen 59% in the last five years.

Only 16% of raped or sexually assaulted women report it to police, where Home Office figures show just 1.6% of reported rapes lead to charges being brought.

Government data shows that of 34,830 households newly assessed in early 2021 as homeless, 5,590 were in that position because of domestic abuse.

Ratifying and implementing the Istanbul Convention should help tackle these issues.
