Closed petition Have a requirement that all learner drivers spend time as a vulnerable road user

Closed on

As part of the driving test, and alongside the requirement to pass the "theory" test and hazard perception, introduce a new standard that mandates all leaners should spend three hours with a cycling club or horse riding society on the road as a vulnerable road user, unless physically exempt

Cyclists and horse riders repeatedly aggressive driving, such as "close passes" from those piloting motor vehicles. In a short 10km round trip to my local town, I often see dangerous driving as a cyclist. I believe showing prospective drivers what vulnerable road users face will encourage them to drive their vehicles better in future.
Therefore, a pre-requisite of the driving license should be that all new drivers have spent 3 hours or more as a vulnerable road user at an organised event.
