Petition All social media should be age restricted to the age of 16, requiring NI number

All social media should be restricted to people who are 16 years or older. Providing a national insurance number should be a requirement to start an account, therefore only one account per one person.

More details

Social media is an over demanding thing that is responsible for depression, anxiety, bullying and general mental heath issues and makes it too easy to share inappropriate information or for people to approach children. Children shouldn't have the ability to talk to strangers and be influenced as to what their body should look like, when they haven't even decided what they want to do after they leave school.

MPs debate the impact of smartphones and social media on children

MPs held a debate on the impact of smartphones and social media on children on Tuesday 14 May in Westminster Hall. The debate was led by Miriam Cates MP.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Saqib Bhatti MP, responded on behalf of the Government.

What is a Westminster Hall debate?

Westminster Hall is the second chamber of the House of Commons. Westminster Hall debates give MPs an opportunity to raise issues and receive a response from a government minister. Westminster Hall debates are general debates that do not end in a vote.
