Closed petition Fund ‘Morpeth Diversion’; a fast alignment around the Morpeth Curve on the ECML

The Government should fund a new faster alignment (to be known as the ‘Morpeth Diversion’) avoiding the Morpeth Curve, which should have major positive impacts on the ECML:

More details

- Improved safety by avoiding a tight speed restriction and a factor in several accidents.

- Improved journey times north of Newcastle.

- Added rail capacity.

A 'Morpeth Diversion' could allow for improvements to journey times by eliminating a 50mph permanent speed restriction through the town of Morpeth, Northumberland.

Other sections of the East Coast Mainline (ECML) have been slated for up to 140mph running, but it seems illogical to not bypass Morpeth Curve, reportedly suggested in 1877 by Captain Henry Tyler following a derailment, and a factor in accidents in 1969, 1984 and 1994. Could also allow for increased rail capacity within the local area.
