Rejected petition "Ring Fence" school places for local residents.
After moving across our Borough, we have been unable to secure a year 8 school place for our son. The two local secondary schools are academies that deal with their own admissions, this has meant that the nearest school for our son is 10 miles away, due to SEND our son can not make this journey
More details
Education is a right not a privilege, with academies setting their own admission policies and being able to take pupils from outside of their catchment areas, this is leading to a reduced number of school places for local pupils, this means that pupils are having to travel greater distances leading to greater environmental and financial impact. local councils are taking money from developers for infrastructure but do not seem to be providing any improvements

Why was this petition rejected?
It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.
School admissions policies are a matter for individual schools and local authorities and are not a matter for the Government. You can read more about school admissions criteria here: https://www.gov.uk/schools-admissions/admissions-criteria
There is an appeals process if you feel the admissions procedure did not follow the schools admissions criteria, or the schools admissions code. More information about appeals can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/schools-admissions/appealing-a-schools-decision
You could start a new petition asking the Government to make a requirement that all schools should ringfence places for students that live locally, if this is something you would like to see happen.
We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
