Closed petition Allow those diagnosed with Crohn’s and Colitis to access Medical Exemption card

Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs). They can cause painful sores (ulcers) and inflammation (swelling) in your digestive tract.

Crohn’s and Colitis are lifelong, chronic conditions and are not curative. Treatment like medicines and surgery are available.

More details

As a Crohn’s patient myself, I have often become anxious about the inevitable future of my illness. This debilitating disease fluctuates between flare ups and remission. Since my first symptoms appeared in August 2021, including blood in my stool, I have had to pay for 3 different medications - which didn’t have a positive impact on my illness.

Those with Crohn’s and colitis are at greater risk of developing bowel cancer. I ask does it need to reach that point for me to seek free prescriptions?

MPs debate Crohn's and Colitis Awareness Week

On Tuesday 12 December, MPs took part in an adjournment debate on Chron's and Colitis Awareness Week. During the debate, MPs discussed the impact of Chron's and Colitis on peoples' day to day lives, and delays to diagnosis faced by many people suffering from these conditions.

The debate was led by Hannah Bardell MP. Andrew Stephenson MP, the Minister for Health and Secondary Care, responded on behalf of the Government.

What are Adjournment debates?

Adjournment debates are general debates which do not end in a vote. They give a backbench MP the opportunity to raise an issue and receive a response from a government minister.
