Suspend VAT on pet foods and basic pet care (eg. vet consultations, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments) for a period of 12 months and subsequently reduce it to 5% permanently.

Due to the current economic climate where many people will struggle to pay their bills, feeding and caring for pets is another worry pet owners will have. It may be pets could be handed in to already overstretched charities or even dumped if owners cannot afford to feed and care for their pets.

This could be devastating, particularly for older people who rely on their pets for company.

It would also help charities who facing higher energy costs as well as having to look after more animals.
