Closed petition Introduce statutory regulation of physician associates (PAs) by 2023

We want the Government to introduce statutory regulation of physician associates (PAs) by 2023, so that they can register with the GMC, issue prescriptions, and request X-rays and ionising radiation.

More details

Physician Associates have been working in the UK since 2003. They can do chest drains, intubate, run cardiac arrests, see and diagnose an array of patients in clinical and surgical settings as well as first assist in theatre. However, because they are not a registered medical profession they cannot issue prescriptions or order an x-ray.

MPs take part in debate on physician associates

On Tuesday 7 February, MPs took part in an adjournment debate on physician associates.

The debate was led by Dr Dan Poulter MP. Health Minister Andrew Stephenson MP responded to the debate on behalf of the Government.

What are Adjournment debates?

Adjournment debates are general debates which do not end in a vote. They give a backbench MP the opportunity to raise an issue and receive a response from a government minister.
