The Crimean crisis and what it reveals about rising Russian aggressiveness calls into question the premise of current defence policy.

In light of this changed international situation the UK should halt its plans for further defence cuts until it can reassess policy in a new Strategic Defence and Security Review in 2015.

Specifically, the plans to disband 12 and 617 Squadrons ('The Dambusters') this spring should be suspended as this represents a cut of over 20% in the RAF's frontline strength and should not go ahead.

We call on the Treasury to use funds from its contingency reserves to keep these two RAF squadrons operational until the next SDSR.
