Rejected petition Reduce train fares to make public transport cheaper than driving.
Reduce train fares to make public transport cheaper or comparable to driving a personal vehicle. This will make public transport more accessible, reduce road congestion and reduce overall UK carbon emissions as fewer people will be driving personal vehicles.
More details
Currently public transport costs are much greater than the cost of petrol on most routes (in many cases even if driving as a single person in a car). An example is, with a railcard to go one way from Birmingham to Edinburgh costs £60 to £90 whereas without a railcard this fee increases to upwards of £130. This same journey would cost around £40 in fuel for an average performing personal car. The train fares should be lowered so that driving is not the cheaper option.

Why was this petition rejected?
It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.
We can't accept your petition because the UK Government and Parliament aren't responsible for the issue you raise. This is a matter for train companies.
The Government does have the power to limit increases in certain rail fares, so we could accept a petition that called for no increase in regulated train fares. You can read more here:
