Closed petition Ban the keeping of live dolphins for public displays and entertainment

Closed on

While there are currently no live dolphins kept in the UK, we want the UK Government to legally ban the keeping of live dolphins, to set an international example for countries that still capture and keep dolphins. There should be exceptions for temporarily housing dolphins where medically necessary.

Following a Government commissioned review of dolphinaria and new legislation governing the keeping of cetacea for public display, the last venue keeping live dolphins closed in 1993. We want legislation to formally ban the keeping of live dolphins for public displays and entertainment. The only reason it should be legal to keep live dolphins is where it is medically necessary, ie. keeping a stranded dolphin until it is fit enough to be released into the wild.
