Closed petition Include time awaiting asylum decision in 5-year qualifying period for ILR

We urge you to include time spent waiting for an asylum decision in the five years refugees must wait to apply for ILR. COVID-19 has led to significant delays in the processing of asylum applications. Many refugees have been waiting for over a year to receive a decision on their asylum application.

More details

We believe that it is not fair to require refugees to wait for a decision on their asylum application before starting the clock on their residency. They have followed the legal process and have been living in the UK legally while they wait for their application to be processed.

Allowing refugees to apply for indefinite leave to remain after five years from the date of applying for asylum would provide them with greater security and stability to rebuild their lives in the UK.

MPs debate asylum applications and asylum seekers’ mental health and wellbeing

On Tuesday 27 June, Gareth Bacon MP led a Westminster Hall debate in Parliament on asylum applications and asylum seekers’ mental health and wellbeing.

During the debate MPs discussed waiting times for consideration of applications for asylum, and how these could be improved.

What are Westminster Hall debates?

Westminster Hall is the second Chamber of the House of Commons.

Westminster Hall debates give MPs an opportunity to raise local or national issues and receive a response from a government minister. Any MP can take part in a Westminster Hall debate.

Debates in Westminster Hall take place on ‘general debate' motions expressed in neutral terms. These motions are worded ‘That this House has considered [a specific matter]'.
